I started down the path, but eventually realized at this point in my life it's more important to really understand the applications more than the theory. I think if you are going into ML research (at the PhD level), you'll probably need some of this math (measure theory, etc). Otherwise, just understanding applications is going to be enough most of the time in my opinion.
